Exploring Brighton

Image
I spent two short but magical days in Brighton in late January. While the weather was anything but glorious, the small city was one I instantly fell in love with, with the picturesque lanes, boutique stores, and sense of expanded village that was to die for. I can only imagine how beautiful this place would be in the spring or summer. I thought I'd take you through the journey I had in Brighton, through the eyes of my camera lens. Enjoy!

Georgia's Elective Diary: Part 9 (Grazzi Hafna Malta, ciao ciao, bye bye bye)

The time has come to say a fond farewell to this little island in the Mediterranean, my time in Malta having come to an end. It was so hard saying goodbye to the great friends I've made over the last six weeks, and now that I've managed to stop crying (typical Georgia), I thought I'd share some of my favourite experiences, and things I've learnt from the last month and a half.  Things I'll miss: Impromptu dance parties in flat four to Uptown Funk or Take Me to Church. Or maybe it was just me that had the dance parties. I think everyone else watched... I will forever associate these songs with Malta. Late night/early evening/late afternoon/early afternoon trips to The Compass for cocktails, or just any sort of alcohol. Getting shitty service one night, and then management getting angry with their staff, and getting incredible service fro then on. Plus, free cake on my birthday was pretty fantastic!  Julia's earworm of the day. 95% of the time it was Total Eclipse...

Georgia's Elective Diary: Part 8 (Gozo frostbite, the Feast of St Paul's Shipwreck and other exciting tales)

I haven't really posted any stories about Malta life, or some of the adventures we've gotten up to on this tiny island so far, but I thought it was time. With people in our apartments from all over the world (Germany, Belgium, England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, South Korea, Romania, and of course us Kiwis) there are always people around who are keen to go on adventures, or explore some of the different things Malta has to offer.  One weekend, we planned a trip to Malta's second largest island, Gozo. The ferry to Gozo is an hour away by bus, so very early one Saturday morning we found ourselves at the bus stop, ready for a long day ahead. Unfortunately (?) for us, we'd had a rather large night the night before, celebrating mine and another birthday that happened to fall on consecutive days, with a big night out in Paceville, Malta's  party district. For some, this meant one hour of sleep, while for others it meant an early morning beer to get going. While waiting...

Georgia's Elective Diary: Part 7 (a Roman Holiday, and London Calling)

Yet again I've left the time between blog posts to creep up on me, and yet again a lot has happened since I last posted. I'm now in my final week of placement in Malta, and can't believe how quickly the time has gone. Before I know it I'll be back in New Zealand, just in time to miss the tail end of summer... At the end of my third week, I hopped on a plane on a Friday and headed off to Italy, to spend a few days in Rome! Having been a Latin and then Classics scholar through high school, Rome was a must for me on this trip, and my three days in the city definitely did not disappoint! Arriving on Friday night, I made my way to the hostel (four seasons rome, would not recommend) and then went out for my first authentic Italian pizza - delicimo!! Day two and I set off early, on the hunt or some  much needed coffee on my way to the historic centre of the city. The cappuccinos I had that morning (two, plus a croissant for €4.00) were still the best coffees I've had in th...

Georgia's Elective Diary: Part 6 (Maltese Musings, and experiences abounding)

I've just started my third week here in Malta and realised its a wee bit quiet on the blog front from me lately. I've started an update a couple of times during boring ward rounds, or sitting on the bus on the way home from the hospital, but so much seems to have happened in my 18 days here in Malta that I'm not really sure how to coherently put it into prose. However, with the current torrential rain and lightning storms outside, I will try and give a brief rundown of my time here so far.  I arrived in Malta on a Friday afternoon, having suddenly realised at Paris airport that I had no idea what my arrival arrangements were, where I was staying or whether the "pick up" from the airport would eventuate. I was grateful to find Malta airport had free wifi and anxiously checked my emails as I waited for my luggage. Surely someone would be there to pick me up?  Luckily for me, as I walked out of customs, there was an old man with a sign for me, and my fears were allev...

2014: In Review (Part 2)

Alright, I'm going to jump on the bandwagon a little bit late, and also because I feel bad for Georgia having done all the posting, as I currently have no life. However, we can still take a trip down memory lane, when I did have a life and what a very busy, fulfilling life it was. I miss it.  Apologies in advance for the extremely long post. What can I say? I love ranting. January I moved into my new flat all by myself (I mean...with the paid help of some movers of course, sure as hell wasn't gonna cart my bed base and mattress half an hour across town). I learnt that I am very good at packing under pressure. The rest of January was a bit lonely though, aside from the fact that Lily came to visit me!! Shreya was also here for her birthday weekend which was so much fun. I won #SluttySummer by some ridiculous miracle. AND THEN I got to be a part of Gee's 22nd birthday party and video via Skype, which was the best thing about January (sorry Tinder). I love that my Wellin...

2014: In Review

Inspired by Lily's new take on the Facebook "year in review" I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and share a few of my favourite or most memorable moments from 2014. No pictures for now, because I've only got access to my phone, but I may add them when I'm back in New Zealand. Jan: I started this year as I meant to go on. Spending last New Years as sober driver meant I woke up feeling fresh and ready to tackle the year ahead. I thought 2013 was a pretty crappy year, and was determined to make 2014 better!  Inspired by Taylor S wift's 22, I forced all my friends to spend my 22nd birthday recreating the music video. The result: amazing. http://youtu.be/_jStlhv2eT8 By the end of Jan, I was sick of the toy store and ready to go back to uni, at least as I interpret my tweets from this period! February came, and with it the start of 5.30wakeups, and a sudden increase in workload that only 5th year could bring.  Keen for this year to be a fashionable one for Nuru...

Georgia's Elective Diary - part 5 (Bonne année et bonne santé)

The past 6 days have most certainly been an adventure! Beginning my first solo journey around the world, visiting cities I've never ever thought I'd get to, and many, many hours staring at the grey speckled walls of airports.  My journey began on Sunday, with the first of four flights to get me to France   (Wellington to Auckland) delayed 45 minutes. They broke the plane. Eventually arriving in Auckland I discovered plane two was also delayed approximately 45 minutes. I went shopping. It took great self restraint not to spend all my money on the MAC counter. Finally I got on my flight to Hong Kong.  Being greeted as I stepped off the plane by someone with a sign for all passengers on flight LX139 to Zurich should have raised warning bells, but my first thought was that we must have arrived late, and they wanted to escort us directly to the next gate. How disappointed I was to discover that in fact no, there was no plane to Zurich in Hong Kong, and that said plane left Zur...
