2014: In Review
Inspired by Lily's new take on the Facebook "year in review" I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and share a few of my favourite or most memorable moments from 2014. No pictures for now, because I've only got access to my phone, but I may add them when I'm back in New Zealand.
Jan:
I started this year as I meant to go on. Spending last New Years as sober driver meant I woke up feeling fresh and ready to tackle the year ahead. I thought 2013 was a pretty crappy year, and was determined to make 2014 better!
Inspired by Taylor Swift's 22, I forced all my friends to spend my 22nd birthday recreating the music video. The result: amazing.
By the end of Jan, I was sick of the toy store and ready to go back to uni, at least as I interpret my tweets from this period!
February came, and with it the start of 5.30wakeups, and a sudden increase in workload that only 5th year could bring.
Keen for this year to be a fashionable one for Nurul and I, we decided to make March our special "30daysoffashion"
This month saw our fashion mostly on point, and our selfie game reach new heights! I also reached physical new heights when I went to adrenaline forest with Emily and we scared ourselves shitless for two hours trying to get across the course. Still one of the best outings of the year though!
29th March brought with it a crazy crazy shopping spree with Nurul and Romana, and the following day a crazy crazy run, when Emily, Nurul, Steph and I took part in the colour run!
With April, the cooler weather arrived for good, and with it came the stress that only fifth year could bring. My tweets became more study focussed over these months, and I became fairly antisocial during this time.
However I also started a #100hapydaystag on Instagram, and throughout the hundred days I really began to get appreciation for the little things that make life special, and loved having to find things in what may have seemed an average day that made it special. I really enjoyed it, and think I'll do it again in 2015!
June:
The middle of the year, and our semester holidays gave me a chance to unwind as we took a trip north for the weekend with a group of high school friends. This was an amazing weekend and I seriously needed the break and the time with friends! To be repeated also!!
July saw our Med ball, as well as preparations for med revue get really into swing! Contrary to my original plan, I got heavily involved with the behind the scenes side of things, but I think that's exactly what my overcommitted self would do!
As med revue rehearsals intensified at the end of July, beginning of August, I don't really remember mix as things got ridiculously crazy. Whoever said helping produce a musical in your fifth year of medical school was a bad idea was probably on to something... However I didn't let that deter me!
September saw me pack up five years of study notes and head to Blenheim for two weeks of sun, sleep, and ... The little blue book of MCQs. I don't think I could have asked for a better location for study though, and it was nice to get out of the city and have some time for soul searching again.
When I returned, it was game on as the countdown to exams really began. The next wee while absolutely flew by in a blur of study and trying to organise my elective, but I finally made it, and shortly in to November I found myself in Sydney! I had an amazing few days there, including going to Wicked, which was possibly the best night out ever, and got a proper break to enjoy the warm weather and relax following the hectic year!
That didn't last long, as I was suddenly whisked off to Adelaide for a five week stint (you've all heard about this of course) at the women's and children's hospital. I loved this placement, and also loved the opportunity to get to know Bonnie, and spend time with my cousins.
Overall 2014 was although a highly stressful year, with a lot of time spent head down, and not much socialising, it was also a great year with plenty of amazing memories! I got to spend a lot of time with my family, in many different ways, which I am very grateful for, and I experienced things that I will treasure for a lifetime!
I cannot wait to see what 2015 brings, and I hope it is just like 2014, but hopefully with some more time to spend with family and friends and less time face in a book!
